Leech Therapy for Skin Diseases

Leech Therapy for Skin Diseases

Medicinal leech therapy (MLT) or hirudotherapy is a complementary and integrative treatment method applied with blood-sucking leeches. One or more leeches are attached to the skin of the problematic area and the purpose is to gain potential utilities of leech saliva that is secreted while the leeches are feeding. MLT has been used for centuries. It has existed for 3000 years, and it is being used at a different scope.
MLT was previously tested and is widely used after plastic, reconstructive, and microsurgical applications, in cardiovascular diseases, deep vein thrombosis, postphlebitic syndrome, complications of diabetes mellitus, tinnitus, acute and chronic otitis, and in reducing the pain of osteoarthritis

What are the benefits of leech therapy?

Leeches are effective at increasing blood circulation and breaking up blood clots. Hence they are used to treat circulatory disorders and cardiovascular disease.

Leech application gives significant relief for the symptoms of eczema.

Common skin diseases: Skin disease typically occurs in the two uppermost layers, the epidermis and the dermis.  By improving blood flow to these two upper layers of skin, leeches help to cure many common skin diseases.

Leech therapy is useful in the field of plastic surgery, Arthritis (Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis), Venous congestion, Varicose veins, Hemorrhoids vascular diseases, Thrombophlebitis, cellulitis, sciatica, inflammatory reactions, blood purification, ischemic heart disease, and hypertension. It is expected to be of paramount importance due to the ease of leech application and minimum side-effect

How does leech therapy work?

Medicinal leeches have three jaws with tiny rows of teeth. They pierce a person’s skin with their teeth and insert anticoagulants through their saliva. The leeches are then allowed to extract blood, for 20 to 45 minutes at a time, from the person undergoing treatment. This equates to a relatively small amount of blood, up to 15 millilitres per leech

During a session, live leeches attach themselves to the target area and draw blood. They release the proteins and peptides that thin blood and prevent clotting. This improves circulation and prevents tissue death. The leeches leave behind small, Y-shaped wounds that usually heal without leaving a scar.

7 Ways to Naturally Soothe Severe Menstrual Pain by Dr Pradnya Aptikar Thane West

7 Ways to Naturally Soothe Severe Menstrual Pain

The menstrual cycle is the regular natural change that occurs in the uterus and ovaries that make the pregnancy possible during the productive age group i.e. 12 yrs. To 50 yrs.

The menstrual cycle is a natural protection of the woman body. It is governed by hormonal changes. Hormones are governed by Emotions, Exercise and Timely food intake. These 3 factors maintain the biological clock of a woman’s body. If it is timely then the menstrual cycle becomes regular (21 to 35 days is the range for a normal menstrual cycle). The average menstrual cycle lasts for 28 days.

But many women from their Menarche (onset of menses in childhood) suffer from severe pain; before or during menses; called dysmenorrhoea. Pain radiates from the lower back to the lower abdomen, vagina, thighs and legs. Some feel severe headaches, body aches and vomiting as premenstrual symptoms. All these symptoms make women very stressed.

Broadly, there are two categories of Dysmenorrhoea —

  1. Pains because of anatomical pelvic pathology – E.g. Fibroids, Adenomyosis, Endometriosis etc.
  2. Pains in absence of pelvic pathology – E.g. Hormonal changes, Water retention, PCOD, etc

For the first category, women should take Doctor’s advice. Sonography will confirm the diagnosis. Women may need surgical intervention.

For the second category, here are some tips to naturally soothe severe menstrual pain:

  1. Exercise — Daily exercise will reduce the severity of pains; especially, Soorya namaskar, bending exercises, Yogasanas, swimming and running.
  2. Water Intake — Drink ample warm water or Cumin seeds decoction (Jeera boiled water), 7 days before the menstruation. That will reduce water retention, congestion.
  3. Salt Intake — Before 7 days of menses, avoid extra salt in foodstuffs and avoid salty foodstuffs like pickles, papads, wafers, cheese, salty butter etc. This will also help in reducing water retention.
  4. Avoid –— some foodstuffs, which may accelerate the pain like Chana dal, besan, potatoes should be avoided 7 days before menses.
  5. Daily — Take Ajwain, dil seeds powder after meals with hot water. This home remedy will reduce the pain during menses.
  6. Local Applications — During Painful menses, one can apply Asafoetida (hing) mixed with a little bit of hot water on the lower abdomen. Hot fermentations with hot water bag or heating pad on the lower back and lower abdomen.
  7. Home remedy for constipation – Constipation increases the severity of pain. Hence, to reduce constipation, take 1 fist black currant. Add 400 ml water to it. Boil it. Reduce it up to 100 ml. filter it and drink it. You can eat boiled black currant also.

With these remedies also, if anyone has no relief then it’s better to consult Gynecologist.

Ayurveda and Yoga: sister sciences

Ayurveda and Yoga are the sister sciences that work best together. They have evolved from the Vedas, part of the same ancient healing tradition with the common goals of preserving our health and raising consciousness.

Ayurveda uses various tools in disease management such as herbs, therapies like Panchakarma bodywork, and Yoga. Ayurveda provides a balance of body and mind, using all that nature can give us – plants, stones, fragrances, water, air.

Yoga helps the harmonization of the consciousness and the physical body using special techniques such as asanas, breathing practices (pranayama), meditation, prayers pronouncing certain sounds.
